But Then You Came
|
John 1:14 (NKJV) |
Imagine a young husband pleading with his runaway wife over the phone. Week after week, he calls to tell her how much he loves her, how the children miss her, and how he wants her to come home. But she remains distant, hiding in a run-down hotel rooms away. Finally, he can't take the separation. He buys a plane ticket, tracks her down, climbs the dingy hotel stairs, and knocks on her door. When she opens it, he simply says, 'We love you. Come home.' She collapses into his arms.
Weeks later, when he asks why she wouldn't come home when he said those same words over the phone, she replies with beautiful simplicity: 'Because before, those were only words. But then you came.'
This is the heart of the incarnation. God could have sent another prophet, written another book, or painted another sign in the sky. But words from a distance weren't enough to heal our deep estrangement. So, Jesus came. He crossed the infinite chasm between heaven and earth to knock on your door. He didn't stay safely in the heavens. He personally entered your struggle to bring you home. His presence changes everything.
